Stanley Mosk Courthouse Department Renumbering — Effective Monday, May 4, 2026

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is renumbering every department at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, effective Monday, May 4, 2026. If you regularly file, serve, or appear at 111 N. Hill Street, your old department numbers are being retired — and the new ones are designed to make the building dramatically easier to navigate.

Here’s what’s changing, why it matters for your case, and how to find the right courtroom on day one.

What’s Changing at Stanley Mosk

Under the new system, each department number now matches its room number, and the first digit of the department number corresponds to the floor the courtroom sits on. Department 215 is on the second floor in Room 215. Department 733 is on the seventh floor in Room 733. The pattern holds throughout the building.

The Court is calling this the “Lost at Mosk” fix — and for anyone who has ever wandered the courthouse hunting for an obscure department, it is a long-awaited improvement.

There is one exception: the Appellate Division will be located in Room 615, regardless of the new pattern.

Department Email Addresses Are Changing Too

The Court is updating department email addresses to mirror the new department numbers. The naming convention stays the same — only the number changes.

Example: SM******@********ca.gov becomes SM********@********ca.gov.

There is a 60-day grace period. Emails sent to the old department addresses will continue to be received until July 3, 2026. After that, messages to old SMCDept[old number]@lacourt.ca.gov addresses will not be delivered.

What This Means for Attorneys, Paralegals, and Process Servers

A few practical action items for the days leading up to May 4:

  • Update your case management system. Any matter with an upcoming hearing at Stanley Mosk should have its department number updated before May 4. Use the crosswalk below as your reference.
  • Audit your eFiling cover sheets and templates. If your firm uses templates that hard-code department numbers in captions or proof-of-service forms, refresh them now.
  • Check your service-of-process instructions. If you have authorized a process server to deliver documents to a specific department or courtroom at Mosk, confirm the new room number with the crosswalk.
  • Refresh your courtesy copy delivery instructions. Courtesy copies are routed directly to the assigned judge’s department. Standing instructions to “deliver to Dept. 1,” “Dept. 32,” or any other old number need to be updated to the new room number before May 4 — otherwise courtesy copies risk being dropped at a department that no longer exists.
  • Update calendar entries. Many practice management platforms pull department numbers automatically from the LACourt feed — but verify on May 4 that they have synced correctly.
  • Notify your clients. A short note ahead of any post-May 4 appearance saves confusion in the lobby.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Stanley Mosk department renumbering take effect?

Monday, May 4, 2026.

Does the renumbering apply to other Los Angeles County courthouses?

No. This change is specific to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 N. Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Other LA Superior Court locations are unaffected.

Are case numbers or judge assignments changing?

No. Only department (courtroom) numbers and department email addresses are being updated. Case numbers, judicial officers, and case files remain the same.

Where is the Appellate Division now?

Room 615. The Appellate Division is the only department whose number does not follow the new room-and-floor matching system.

What if I send an email to an old department address after July 3, 2026?

It will not be delivered. Old SMCDept[old number]@lacourt.ca.gov accounts stop receiving messages 60 days after May 4, 2026.

What if I show up to my old department on or after May 4?

Mosk staff will have the crosswalk on hand and signage throughout the building is being updated. You’ll be redirected, but plan to arrive a few minutes early to give yourself a buffer.

How does the renumbering affect courtesy copy delivery?

Courtesy copies are delivered to the judge’s department, so when the department number changes, the delivery destination changes with it. Any standing courtesy copy instructions tied to old department numbers — at your firm or with a vendor — must be updated to the new room number from the crosswalk before May 4. Judge assignments themselves are unchanged.

Courtesy Copy Delivery at Mosk: What’s Different

Courtesy copy delivery is one of the services most directly affected by this change. Courtesy copies are routed to the judge’s specific department, so when the department numbers move, every standing delivery instruction needs to move with them.

A few specifics worth flagging:

  • Standing instructions tied to old department numbers will fail after May 4. If your firm has saved templates, intake forms, or vendor instructions referencing “Dept. 1,” “Dept. 23,” or any other old number, those need to be updated to the new room number from the crosswalk above.
  • Judge assignments have not changed. Only the department number and physical room have. If you know the judicial officer your courtesy copy is going to, the crosswalk gets you to the right room.
  • Use the new room as the delivery target. Because the new department numbers match the room numbers, the same number works for delivery instructions, e-service routing, and anyone meeting your courier in the building.
